”Enhancing your homes’ curb appeal can significantly influence its saleability and even value. ”
Tom Thorman - TCA's Green Fingered Expert
Enhancing your home’s curb appeal can significantly influence its saleability and even value.
A YouGov survey revealed that 68% of homebuyers prioritise curb appeal when searching for their dream home.
Additionally, research indicates that a professionally designed landscape could boost property value by 20%.
So we asked local green-thumped gardening expert Tom Thorman, his top tips.

1.
Tidy up & declutter; start by removing weeds, dead plants, and any clutter like broken pots or old garden furniture.
Trim hedges, feed & mow the lawn, and sweep paths to create a neat and inviting space. A bag of 4 in 1 lawn feed, can go along way.
Remove any invasive species such as common ivy, ground elder, common ragwort, bindweed & japanese knotweed. These plants can have an over controlling impact of the garden and could put off potential buyers.

2.
Refresh Borders & Beds Add fresh mulch or compost to flower beds and borders to give them a healthy, well-kept appearance.
Plant colourful, low-maintenance flowers that will be in bloom during summer, such as lavender, petunias, or geraniums.
3.
Fix & Clean Hardscaping Power wash patios, pathways, and decking to remove dirt and moss.
Repair any broken fencing, repaint sheds or garden walls, and check that gates are secure and functional.

4.
Create a Welcoming Outdoor Space Set up an outdoor seating area with clean, stylish furniture to help buyers visualise the garden as a place for relaxation and entertaining.
Consider adding solar-powered lights for a warm evening ambiance.
5.
Consider privacy enhancement. This can be achieved by planting fast growing shrubs such as Buddleia, Portuguese Laurel, Photinia or Lilac.
This will often make people feel safe and comfortable in the garden.

Considerations:
🌦 Weatherproofing: UK gardens need to withstand damp conditions, so consider moss-resistant paving and weather-resistant furniture.
🌷 Seasonal Plants: Lavender and geraniums are great choices, but UK gardens also benefit from hardy perennials like foxgloves, roses, and alliums.
🏡 Small Gardens: Many UK homes have compact gardens, so maximising space with vertical planters, mirrors, or neatly arranged furniture can enhance appeal.

If in doubt, get in touch with a local landscaper or professional gardener for expert advice.
Most importantly, give yourself enough time to get your garden picture-ready before viewings begin.
